News and Information

New technologies are driving a technological revolution in the mineral processing field, and flotation technology will reach the nanometer level.

Recently, news came from Liaoning University of Science and Technology that the research team led by Dr. Tao Dongping—Distinguished Professor at Liaoning University of Science and Technology, Yangtze River Scholar, professor under the National Thousand Talents Program, and head of the beneficiation team at the Academician Workstation—has achieved a breakthrough in the separation and utilization of difficult-to-process fine and ultrafine particles after 15 years of development in nanobubble flotation technology.
Nano-bubbles are tiny gas bubbles with diameters ranging in the hundreds of nanometers. Numerous AFM observations and light-scattering experiments have confirmed that nano-bubbles indeed exist at the interface between liquids and hydrophobic solids. Dr. Tao Dongping pointed out that nano-bubbles tend to form preferentially on hydrophobic particles, representing a natural selective process in which collision and adhesion occur simultaneously. By conducting in-depth research into traditional flotation technology from multiple perspectives—including flotation kinetics, fluid dynamics, and interfacial chemistry—Dr. Tao and his team were the first to propose the theoretical framework for nano-bubble flotation and developed practical technologies applicable to both flotation columns and mechanically agitated flotation cells.
Compared to traditional flotation techniques, which suffer from low collision probabilities between fine particles and bubbles, low adhesion probabilities between coarse particles and bubbles, and high detachment probabilities for coarse particles, nano-bubble flotation can effectively separate difficult-to-float fine and ultrafine particles, accelerate the mineralization rate, significantly improve flotation recovery and concentrate grade, greatly simplify the ore-processing flow, reduce equipment investment, and lower maintenance and operating costs.
Dr. Tao Dongping emphasized that the “nanobubble” flotation column technology boasts unparalleled advantages and breakthrough potential. Nanobubbles can serve as auxiliary collectors, reducing the dosage of chemical collectors by approximately one-third to one-half. The mechanism behind nanobubble generation is unique, enabling a reduction of more than one-third in the amount of frothing agents used. At the same time, this technology effectively addresses the challenges of difficult flotation associated with both coarse and fine particles, completely breaking through the technological bottleneck that has long hindered the recovery of tailings. As a result, it helps mining enterprises rapidly achieve cost reductions and efficiency improvements, offering extremely promising prospects.
This new technology developed by Dr. Tao Dongping’s team holds epoch-making historical significance for China’s mineral processing industry and will spearhead a technological revolution in both the mineral processing field and the mining industry.
Currently, Dr. Tao Dongping’s research team is working closely with entities such as Anshan Iron and Steel Group to strive for the rapid industrial application of nano-bubble flotation technology.
